I work with children individually as well as in large groups. The Breathing Circle approach is aimed especially toward the child between one and seven. Using songs and verses, and rhythms and games, I work with movement in order to support a freer flow of breath and a greater sense of well being. The capacity for learning is deepened and attention and sensory motor integration enhanced through enjoyable and easy movement which offers greater vitality to the whole body and being of the child.
For teachers of older children I offer mentoring, consultation, and instructional assistance for approaching drama. Guidance toward expression that relies upon the natural breath can maximize both the students' enjoyment and the pedagogic value of drama, as he or she becomes more deeply connected to the natural breath rhythm. Information on my work with drama for children is here.
I support teachers by offering workshops in games and movement. Teachers can experience for themselves the direct benefits of this approach. Specific kinds of movement support specific forms of integration in the body, and these can be taught through enjoyable songs and activities. The activities help teachers become more aware of posture, and what may be problematic for a child in their ability to be present in the class.
This work is very appropriate for teachers who would like to explore the possibilities of a more flowing classroom management, and who would like support in deepening learning through circle and storytelling activities for their students. Students are usually very responsive when invited to participate through song, drama and movement, and the teacher can find deeper levels of vitality for his/her own teaching through simpler, more elegant, approaches. I can also offer support with individual students who may have attention difficulties or other social/learning challenges that affect participation and deeper learning within the whole group. Workshops can be provided on site for teachers as in-service training, including demonstrations with the children in the classroom, and guidance in using The Breathing Circle handbook. Group in-service trainings for teachers are a particularly effective option. These foster group learning, collegiality, and site-specific adaptations and innovations. I also offer teachers mini-trainings and individual mentorships to develop greater awareness of their own breath, to deepen perceptual abilities with the unfolding child and his or her individual needs, and to learn different activities that support many kinds of somatic development. Alongside the perceptual training I also can guide teachers in generating material for their children out of their own creativity. I lead early childhood groups independently, as well as currently or recently under the auspices of the East Bay Waldorf School, Greater Richmond Social Services, and the Albany Pre-School Co-op. I presented at the California Literacy Conference in 2000, and I am a selected presenter at the California Kindergarten Conference at San Francisco State University in January of 2002. In addition, I have extensive experience mentoring teachers in both affiliated and charter Waldorf schools as well as in Waldorf inspired initiatives. Here is more on my background and trainings. |
